This tutorial was published in the November 2009 LightWave newsletter. Unfortunately the URL of that newsletter changes every month so I can't link to it, but I can link to the files.

This is the actual tutorial in PDF form:
http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/images/profiles/imagesfile/newsletter/0911/unity/unity_tutorial_01.pdf

Here are some sample objects that were used in the tutorial. You may also recognize them from my demo reel.
http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/images/profiles/imagesfile/newsletter/0911/unity/lw_Unity.zip

This is a final playable version of the "game".
http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/images/profiles/imagesfile/newsletter/0911/unity/phils_simple_level.zip

You will need to have the Unity Web Player installed. You can get that here:
http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/images/profiles/imagesfile/newsletter/0911/unity/Unity_WebPlayer.zip

Tire tread
Also recently someone asked me to explain how I did the tread for my tires on the Audi R8 model I'm currently working on. So I wrote up a quick tutorial explaining how that was done in Photoshop and 3D-Coat, the exported to LightWave.

Here is the tutorialin PDF format:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3083393/tire_tread_tutorial.pdf

And this is the tire tread photo I used for reference:

Slacking

Sorry I've been slacking off on my posts but I'm always available on Twitter if you are interested. The tutorial was featured in the November 2009 LightWave 3D newsletter.
http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/newsletter.php

Currently I'm working on a sculpture of the character, Armitage from the movies and OAVs of the same name. Everyone on the forums said bring it in, get it replaced. So I drove a half hour out to the nearest Apple store and they replaced it... with a broken one! So I brought that one back and they replaced it again. This one works well enough, but it feels like it's shoddily put together. The Home button is loose and if you tap the area around it it makes a hollow noise like it's not put together snugly. When tapping the same spot on the other end of the phone, it sounds nice and solid. I think the most I ever had was close to 80 in one day.

Gizmodo link:
http://gizmodo.com/339601/nintendo-ds-2-the-3d-mock+up-makes-us-drool-even-more

Digg Link:
http://digg.com/nintendo/Nintendo_DS_2_the_3D_Mock_Up_Makes_Us_Drool_Even_More

Big thanks to Jesus Diaz!

Nintendo DS 2 Prototype

I was inspired by the image Gizmodo came up with for what they'd like to see the next DS look like as seen here.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/all-giz-wants/n...k+up-332353.php

As I worked I got more ideas from the iPhone, PSP, and Wii.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; They cost $50 for the download version. Which is a little high, even for good quality videos. Which brings me to my point. I have gone through the first few videos and am little disappointed.

Firstly the videos are very highly compressed, so they don't look very good and the audio sounds distorted. The thing is, they compressed it so much , but not enough to fit on a CD. They are slightly larger at 750MB, so I have to use a DVD and waste all that space, which could've been used for higher quality videos.

Next is the teacher, Nicholas Pellegrino. Perhaps it's partly due to the nature of xStream and the fact that it doesn't work very well, but in some parts it feels like he really doen't know what he's doing. Like he'll try something and say, "no that didn't work, let's try this... Ah that did it.". Unless this is just his teaching style and it's not obvious enough, I feel like a teacher should really have planned out what he intends to teach and know what will work and what will not before he starts the lesson. Another problem is that he says something, then repeats it several times with different words. A good example is a scene with a transparent object and two objects behind it. and he says something to the effect of "after adjusting that setting you can see through the object. You can see this object behind it, and you can also see this other object behind it". That was a short and simple example, but it gets my point across. He does offer some good information when he gets around to saying it.

Frankly at those prices for this quality I don't think I would buy any videos from AsileFX.

A couple screenshots of my iphone

PS3

I'm quite proud of myself, I got a good deal. So far I've been very disappointed. First it wouldn't work on my main computer because it only works on 32 bit OSs. So I had to connect it to my old computer to activate it. Now iTunes, which I've never used before, will not sync my music to it. I'm sure I'll get that fixed eventually, but I hope this is the last of the problems I have with this thing after I spent over $400 on it.

Edit: The sync thing was my own fault, I didn't see the tabs across the top of iTunes for choosing which items you want to sync. Nothing was selected, so of course nothing synced.

Digital Rebel

A few days ago I picked up a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. See here. For the internet I got 15Mbps down, 2Mbps up. So far my experiments with large files were on and off.

Installation took about 9 hours and they aren't finished yet, they still have to come back tomorrow and attach a cable. They had to temporarily hook me into my neighbor's box.

Downloading a 1080p movie trailer from Quicktime.com was very fast. Downloading an episode of The Totoally Rad Show via Juice was very slow, about 400KBps. It could be that I need to forward some ports in the new router they gave me since (I believe) Juice uses bittorrent to download. Azureus won't download at all, so that may be it. Downloading an HD episode of Diggnation via HTTP quickly topped off at 1.7Mbps, then started slowly dropping, getting as low as 700KBps. Bandwidthplace.com said I had a 1.2Mbps download speed, but they also said they don't support connections over 8. PCpitstop.com said my download is 12Mbps. This leads me to wonder if they are throttling video downloads. I'll have to try to find a large non-video file to download and test.

With the TV setup I got one HD/DVR box and one standard box. I was a little disappointed that there is no HD content on-demand. That was something I really enjoyed with Comcast. Also FiOS On Demand seems to be lacking. I expected that i'd never see Comcasts Tube Time OD channel again, but I also seem to be missing some other channels like Sci-Fi and Cartoon Network. possibly others that I haven't seen yet.

I've been hearing all about this new fancy interface that FiOS has and it looks fantastic! In the screenshots I've seen on the web. My setup apparently doesn't have it yet so I get a dull slate gray menu that looks similar to what Comcast has.

The DVR works very well, the remote buttons have a fast response time for FForward, Rewind, Pause and Record. The recorded video quality of HDTV is also extremely good, it looks exactly as it would if it were live. Of course I've never had a DVR before, so this may be the same with TIVO or Comcast.

Over all I'm sorry to say I'm a little disappointed. Hopefully it will get better, with the nearly unlimited speed of fiber Verizon should be able to offer a lot more.

My first PC build

Things have been going well with High 5, but my old PC just wasn't cutting it any more, so I took some of the money I earned and built my first homebrew PC. I went with a Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz CPU, nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB, 2GB RAM, 400GB harddrive and Vista Ultimate x64. The case I got is cool to look at and also keeps the internals very cool and ventilated. I've been using it for a week now and have had no real problems aside from some of my older programs not working right in Vista, which is understandable. There's plenty of room for upgrading, so it should last me quite a while. Attached is a pic I snapped right after I finished putting everything together. Just a one day thing, but they may have more. still no word from Shooters on that project that was first brought up a couple weeks ago. Though I was told last week That I'd be contacted by another guy I know there who's producing the spot.

I've also signed up for Acclaim's project "Top Secret", along with more than 20,000 other people. The idea is that all of these people get together to make a game and of those people one will be chosen to direct their next game. Also Acclaim and possibly other companies will be hiring from the group. I don't know how much time I'll have to work on it, but it should be fun.

Berklee Scores Chimera

200 Student s and 5 schools gathered for their biggest effort to date, a 150 piece orchestra.
